The Short Vowel

The short vowel or short a is a sound which can be perceived as shorter than a lengthy vowel. The duration of a sound determines the length of a vowel. The length of the short vowel can be defined as how long the sound is perceived by listeners.

Long u

The English language contains five vowels, each representing different sounds. Each vowel's length varies depending on where it is located in the word and how its pronunciation is made. These vowels fall into one of two categories: short vowels or long vowels. Long vowels have a long sound and are used in words that end in a consonant.

In words that begin with a vowel, short vowels can be used. These words often end with a consonant, such /i/, /a/. The long form u is not common and is seldom used.

The short version

Vowel length is how long a vowel sounds. This is not the same as its physical measurement. It refers to the length of a vowel sound. The length of a vowel is how long a person perceives the vowel sound to be. A shorter vowel is less than a longer one.

Words that contain two "short" vowels are called diphthongs. The words "be" and "seed" have pure vowels, while the words "go" and "ride" contain diphthongs. These rules are not absolute. However, there are exceptions. In most cases, a brief vowel is used if there are only 2 consonants.

CVC words with a short a

CVC words are best understood by young readers through the breaking down of words into rimes/onsets. The onset refers to the first sound in a word while the rime refers to the rest. The onset for the word "hat", for example, is /h/ with a rime being /at/. This way, students can practice reading the word using only one part at a time, making it easier for them to learn to blend the two together. A great way to practice this is to use word family worksheets.

Once students have mastered the initial consonant sound, they can move on to the next developmental step: learning short vowel sounds in CVC words. This will allow them to move from individual phonemes into phonological blending. Students will find it easier to learn with the same-vowel family than words that are written in individual letters.

Long u in mute

The short vowel length u can be used in some words that are in a mute format. This form of the vowel is less common that the one-word version. The u silente e can either be spelled at beginning, middle, or end of a word. It can also make both the /yoo/ /oo/ sound. This makes it difficult to pronounce, especially after a long vowel.

This spelling should be used with care. The ui sound can be pronounced as "oo" It is however not the most commonly used sound. You can also hear it in words like "some" and "sum," where the long u is used for the /oo/ sound.
